In Part I I wrote about the Velocite RT50 vision, development and extensive testing. This time I will share the physical characteristics and studio photos as the first batch of wheels is finally with us!
Specifications
Rims: Road Tubeless carbon clincher with removable reflective decals
Profile: 50mm deep, 23mm wide, symmetrical airfoil shape when the tire is installed
Hubs: Gram 20/24
Weight (without tubeless kit – tape, valves): 1630g
Price: US$ 1989
The rims are finished in 3k carbon fiber in order to obtain a smoother finish and to save a little bit of weight given the particular layup that the rims are using. Woven carbon still has its uses depending on the rest of the layup which for this wheelset is UD (unidirectional) carbon fiber. The resin system is what is commonly referred to as “high Tg” or high glass transition temperature. In the case of thermoset resins this measurement denotes the temperature at which the resin starts degrading and failing. As established during our machine testing the Tg for this wheelset is 192.8 degrees Celsius which is very high.
The rims are clear coated in matte finish and the decals that we are using for the first batch (we’ll experiment some more over time) are removable and reflective! Yes, they will reflect car headlights for example, increasing your safety during night rides or off season training.
In Part III I will discuss their aerodynamics and handling properties. I will need to prepare some simulation files that will show you what actually happens to the airflow and what to expect from the wheels aerodynamically.
